Going through a divorce is a highly stressful event no matter why you and your spouse have decided to separate. This is true even if you both agree that the divorce is in your best interest. This is particularly true if one of you wants the divorce and the other one does not.

There are steps you can take to ease the emotional pain of divorce. Some suggestions are:

See a counselor. It can always help to talk to a counselor, even in the easiest of divorces. There is a lot of grief that comes with the loss of a marriage. Years ago, after conducting an intense study, two psychiatrists developed a chart where they ranked 43 life events according to their stress level. Divorce ranked as the second most stressful life event. The only thing more stressful than divorce is the death of a spouse.

Surround yourself with supportive family and friends. Avoid those who criticize you and seek comfort from those who can give it.  

Attend support groups. Become active with a support group. This may be through your church or a grief counseling group, or any group that provides you solace.

Give yourself time. You are going through a lot. You may have to move from your long-time home to a different one. You may be sharing custody with the other parent and not have as much time with your children as you used to have and as you want to have now. Give yourself space and grace.  You are grieving and need time to work through the phases of grief. These are all changes that take time to adjust to.

Develop a routine for physical activity. This may be working out or just going for a walk every day. Any type of physical activity helps you relieve stress even if it is just for a few minutes every day.P

Taking care of yourself and releasing your stress physically, mentally, and emotionally, allows you to think more clearly. This helps you make the important decisions you need to make with a clear head and less stress.
